How BestPlaceUK handles your data and respects your privacy.

Overview

BestPlaceUK is designed with privacy in mind. We do not require user accounts, collect personal information, or track individual users. This policy explains what limited data processing occurs when you use the Site.

What We Collect

We collect minimal data to operate the Site:

  • No personal accounts — The Site does not require registration, login, or any personal information to use.
  • Local storage — Your shortlist and preferences (such as "Find My Match" weights) are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. This data never leaves your device.
  • Server logs — Firebase Hosting may collect standard server logs including IP addresses, browser type, and pages visited. These logs are used for operational purposes and are managed by Google under their Firebase Privacy Policy.

Cookies

BestPlaceUK uses a small number of cookies to run the site and, with your permission, to show adverts that help keep the service free. You can review what we use and change your choices at any time on our Cookie Policy page.

Third-Party Services

The Site relies on the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

Data Retention

Since we do not collect personal data, there is no personal data to retain. Your locally stored preferences persist in your browser until you clear your browser data. Server logs are managed by Firebase according to Google's data retention policies.

User Accounts

If you create an account, we collect and store the following personal data in Google Cloud Firestore (hosted in europe-west2, London):

  • Email address and display name (provided at registration)
  • Profile photo URL (if signing in with Google)
  • Your area reviews, ratings, and comments
  • Saved preferences, quiz results, comparisons, and personal notes
  • Alert preferences and shortlisted areas

This data is used to personalise your experience, deliver email alerts you request, and display your reviews to other users. We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.

Retention: Your data is retained until you delete your account. Reviews remain visible after account deletion but are attributed to "Former resident" with all personal identifiers removed.

Your Rights

Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR), you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: You can view all your data in your Dashboard
  • Right to rectification: Edit your display name in Settings
  • Right to erasure: Delete your account in Settings. This removes all personal data and anonymises your reviews
  • Right to data portability: Export your data from Settings

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be effective immediately upon posting to the Site. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
